Surveyor

This is something I really enjoy, because I honestly learn something new every single day.
What does a typical day look like for you as a Surveyor?
As a surveyor, our main job onboard is data acquisition, using a range of equipment. It can be really satisfying to see the seabed take shape as we collect more data. It’s a bit like filling in a blank map, where each survey line adds another piece of the picture. Since we all work onboard in a small team, we are also involved in everything from logistics and mooring to safety drills, technical troubleshooting and handiwork. Depending on the project, equipment used and weather conditions, the job is totally different. This is something I really enjoy, because I honestly learn something new every single day.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I really enjoy that my job brings together my background in marine science with being out at sea. I get to work closely with my colleagues, have a work-life balance that suits me, and see a lot of cool new places. This shift, we are going to a remote lighthouse in beautiful Scotland, and we saw dolphins!
What advice would you give to someone considering a career as a Surveyor?
Working on a small vessel, you have many roles onboard. Having some seamanship experience is definitely a big advantage. You are part of the team and help with more than just surveying — from mooring to the daily life onboard. If you enjoy working with technology, being out at sea, and being part of a close team, I would really recommend applying for a surveyor role!
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, travelling, and making the most of my time onshore. I like to try something new, whether it’s a new hobby, exploring new places, or spending time by the water — hiking, sailing or going for a swim
